Secularism and Secular Humanism in the

Peace Movement

The place of Secularism and secular humanism in the peace movement is in its campaigning voice for rational, evidence based solutions to conflict situations and situations that may lead to conflict.

We are against superstition and sectarianism.

We believe that mediation, negotiation and non-violent action are the best way of problem solving. Solutions that are fair and objective are likely to lead to sustained solutions that are acceptable to all parties and will avoid the festering resentment that is born of injustice and forced compliance with inequitable agreements.

History as well as current affairs are littered with conflicts caused, directly or indirectly by superstitious beliefs the most widespread of which is religion; and conflicts over resources or other disputes that are made intractable by the divisiveness of religion.

We think that there has never been a greater need for human society to pay attention to the causes of conflict and reject systems of belief that have and do lead to violence and killing.

Essential to this rationale is that every country needs to join with the world community and support the UN, and not listen to the divisive voices of nationalism and sectarianism.

There are good people who are religious just as there are good non-believers but political religion must not be allowed to undermine the striving for peace.
